5 Ways to Apply the “Three Rs” in Your Home

In the world we’re living in today, it’s important to be mindful of your everyday actions. There are a lot of us here, more than 7.6 billion to be exact, and that number grows every year.

At Frito-Lay, a big part of how we operate takes place at our 31 manufacturing sites around the U.S. – our facilities are where we produce the snacks our consumers love.

At Frito-Lay’s sites, we are constantly exploring new ways to reduce our environmental impact, especially in areas like energy, water and waste.

Many of the practices we use at our manufacturing sites can even be applied in the home. It may seem like a time-intensive task, but there are small steps you can take daily that can make a difference. Here are five to consider now.

1 – Be Mindful of Your Water Usage
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average household in the U.S. uses 88 gallons of water daily, and 180 gallons of water is wasted weekly. To put that in perspective, that’s 9,400 gallons of water annually – that amount of water can fill some backyard swimming pools. But, what can you do? Be hyper aware of when you’re using water – turning water off while brushing your teeth, limiting when you water your lawn and fixing water leaks can help.

At Frito-Lay, we have a team of colleagues constantly evaluating water usage at our plants. Today, we’re standardizing water practices to reduce our use, and reuse where we can.

2 – Utilize LED Lightbulbs, Turn off Lights and Use Motion Sensors
If you’re wondering what the buzz is about LED lights, consider this – the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has determined LED lights use at least 75 percent less energy in the home, and last 25 times longer. This can help save on those electricity bills, and also reduce trips to the store to buy replacement bulbs.

At our plants around the U.S., we are working to convert to LED lighting, and we’ve made it so the lights automatically turn off in areas when we aren’t using them. We have a similar system in place at some plants for auto heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), turning off things like fans when they are not in use.

3 – Take Care of your Things
This one seems kind of silly, right? But there are items likely in your home you don’t put in the proper place, don’t always clean, aren’t wearing in your closet, etc. Being extra mindful of the care of your items will keep you from having to throw them away, and thus likely ending up in a landfill. With clothing, and many household items, there is also an opportunity to donate to someone in need through a local charity.

At Frito-Lay, we’re proud to say our 31 U.S. manufacturing facilities combined send less than 1.5 percent of waste to landfill. Meaning, we recycle or reuse all that we can. And, we’re constantly working to reduce that number even further.

4 – Walk, Bike or Carpool – and Use Your GPS
According the EPA, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. You can do your part here by walking or biking where you can, or even carpooling. Try to also get smart on what vehicles emit more greenhouse gasses than others. The EPA has great resources to help you understand what this means.

Using your GPS in your car before you take off to your destination can help, too. It can put you on the most-efficient route – saving you time and gas.

Frito-Lay and our parent company PepsiCo are working hard to create the most fuel-efficient fleet possible. In fact, our current fleet includes several different fuel-efficient models, including electric vehicle route trucks, compressed natural gas freight trucks and advanced diesel technology from some of the leading manufacturers around the world. And our 14,000+ drivers are doing their part, too, by ensuring we create the most efficient routes, and use GPS to get us where we need to go.

5 – Remember the Three Rs
You may have noticed a theme here, and it’s one to keep in mind daily – reduce, reuse, recycle. Take those three considerations into all you do, and you’re already on the path to reduce energy, water and waste.
