Fleet Sustainability

fleet-sustainabilityIn order to keep our environmental promise, we're continually innovating, finding new and better ways to reduce emissions from our tractor trailers and delivery vehicles.

  • We operate a fleet which includes 269 electric delivery trucks and 208 compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks.
  • We joined President Obama's National Clean Fleets Partnership in 2011 and committed to further reduce our vehicles’ diesel and gas use.

Improving Our Fleet

In 2007, one third of Frito-Lay's greenhouse gas emissions came from our sales and delivery fleet – the cars and trucks driven by the hard-working people who deliver our snacks to stores and supermarkets all over the country. So we're working on solutions to conserve fuel and reduce emissions.

"At Frito-Lay, our goal is to be the most fuel-efficient fleet in the country," says Mike O'Connell, Director of Fleet Capability. "Our comprehensive fleet sustainability strategy looks at everything from fuel sources to vehicle design."

An example of new vehicle design is the Sprinter truck. The first order of Sprinters is now on the road, and their efficient engines, aerodynamic design, and lightweight materials mean our drivers are now getting nearly 50% more miles per gallon than our previous trucks. This means we're using less fuel and producing less greenhouse gas.

But it’s not all about technology. As Steve Hanson, Fleet Sustainability Engineer, says: "Driver training can have up to a 30% impact on miles per gallon." So we're not only changing the vehicles we drive, we're changing the way we drive – planning routes to minimize idling, for instance.

At Frito-Lay, you don’t have to choose between good work and good fun — because you know you’re creative and love what you do when you have the freedom to do both. Explore possibilities! »
