Improving Our Fleet
"At Frito-Lay, our goal is to be the most fuel-efficient fleet in the country," says Mike O'Connell, Director of Fleet Capability. "Our comprehensive fleet sustainability strategy looks at everything from fuel sources to vehicle design."
An example of new vehicle design is the Sprinter truck. The first order of Sprinters is now on the road, and their efficient engines, aerodynamic design, and lightweight materials mean our drivers are now getting nearly 50% more miles per gallon than our previous trucks. This means we're using less fuel and producing less greenhouse gas.But it’s not all about technology. As Steve Hanson, Fleet Sustainability Engineer, says: "Driver training can have up to a 30% impact on miles per gallon." So we're not only changing the vehicles we drive, we're changing the way we drive – planning routes to minimize idling, for instance.
And our fleet of 650 sales cars has already been converted to hybrid vehicles, meaning we can travel the country using less fuel.
All in all, making our fleet more efficient is showing the potential to achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2017 while our drivers still get your snacks to the store fresh and on time.
