At Frito-Lay, we're constantly exploring ways to reduce the environmental footprint of our packaging. While we are exploring some exciting long term solutions, like using renewable resources to make our chip bags, we will be partnering with TerraCycle, an innovative company that ‘upcycles’, turning waste into new products.
Imagine a future where your chip bags won’t end up in landfills. Your used packaging will be given a second lifecycle as an everyday product, like a clipboard, tote bag, or trash can. All you have to do is collect used Frito-Lay chip bags and send them to TerraCycle. We’ll even pay the postage! And to express our gratitude for your help in advancing our ‘zero landfill’ initiative, for each approved chip bag you send in, $0.02 will be donated to the school or non-profit organization of your choice.

TerraCycle takes obsolete and used packages and other non-recyclable materials and turns them into affordable, high quality goods via a process called upcycling. They also turn recyclable packaging into raw material to be made into products. In 2010, Entrepreneur magazine named them “One of The Most Brilliant Companies of the Year”, in 2006 Inc. Magazine named them the “coolest little start-up in America”, and they twice received The Home Depot Environmental Stewardship Award for being their most-environmental responsible supplier. Find them on the web at Terracycle.net or on National Geographic’s new show, Garbage Moguls. Terracycle.net Garbage Moguls
Upcycling is the process of using waste in its existing form to create new products. Recycling, by contrast, breaks the material down (e.g,. a plastic bottle is turned into plastic pellets) and reforms it into new products. With upcycling, the waste is simply cleaned and shaped, sewn, or fused into new products, like messenger bags, lunch boxes, garbage cans, classroom notebooks, shower curtains and kites.
Frito-Lay is making this program available to all 48,000 of our employees across the country and consumers just like you. We are seeking ‘captains’ to form ‘Bag Brigades’, who will collect used bags from their family, friends, classmates, and co-workers and send them to TerraCycle using postage-paid shipping labels provided by Frito-Lay. Consumers can sign up to become a ‘captain’ of a ‘Chip Bag Brigade’ online. Due to high interest in the Chip Bag Brigades, there may be a wait list. Sign up for a Frito-Lay Chip Bag Brigade. Frito-Lay employees will be given an opportunity to participate at their local site. Join Frito-Lay Chip Bag Brigade
Frito-Lay will donate $0.02 per bag collected (all Frito-Lay brands and sizes are included) to a school or non-profit organization chosen by each Chip Bag Brigade.
By working with Terracycle, Frito-Lay has already diverted over 2 million bags from landfills (as of Oct 2010)! In addition to the donations we make to schools and nonprofit organizations, we also hope to engage thousands of people just like you to raise awareness of reusing, upcycling, and recycling in your local communities.
