The Green Scene: Meet Environmental Coordinator Fred Brown

FredBrownPhotoToday we’re bringing you another edition in our series “The Green Scene,” which showcases the “Green Teams” at each of our plants who help Frito-Lay achieve its sustainability goals. We’re also meeting the great people behind these teams -- like Environmental Coordinator Fred Brown. 

Fred works at our Aberdeen, Md., plant, where he’s responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations, supporting sustainability projects within the plant and leading the plant’s Green Team. He’s been the environmental coordinator (EC) for the last nine years. Before that, he spent 10 years in a variety of roles at the plant in quality, processing and packaging.

What are you doing at your plant that’s helping Frito-Lay be more sustainable? 

We recycle everything we possibly can. In fact, we send less than one percent of our waste to landfill. The few remaining items go to the local incinerator. Even then, we can recover the heat given off by the incineration process and reuse it for other processes. 

What’s the most interesting aspect of your job?

Given our focus on reusing everything, one of the cool parts of my job is finding ways to reuse waste we generate. For example, the food waste leftover from the chip-making process is sold to local companies: the dry waste goes to be used as chicken feed and the wet waste goes to a cattle farm. Our obsolete roll stock – the film we use to make our chip bags -- is sold to a vendor to be used to make bags and pouches. And all of our other waste gets recycled by a local vendor.

What are some of the ways you and the Green Team support your local community’s sustainability efforts?

We’re involved in a number of ways.  For instance, we “own” a stretch of highway and participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program. We also help with the city of Aberdeen’s Earth Day event. And we visit local schools to educate them on the environment. We enjoy being able to give back to the area where we live and work.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a job like yours?

I would recommend that they pursue their education. Also, it’s really important to familiarize yourself with and stay up-to-date on your local and state regulations.

    I would like to know if there is anyway to recycle the packaging from Fritos.It is like half way between metal and plastic so I have my doubts.  That is nothing apparent on the bag and I suspect I know why. Isn't there a way to use more recycle friendly packaging?
