The Green Scene: Meet Environmental Coordinator Steve English

We’re bringing you another installment of The Green Scene, our series that showcases the Environmental Coordinators (ECs) and Green Teams at each of our Frito-Lay plants. For this edition, I sat down with Steve English, the EC at our Kirkwood, N.Y. plant. Steve has worked at Kirkwood for the last 31 years, and has spent the last nine years as the EC. Steve shared with me some of the highlights of his job, and you can check them out below.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the sustainability field?

SteveEnglishWhen the EC role became available, I really like the idea of going into a field that was new and challenging. This job is all about doing things that are right for people and the environment, and if you have a passion for both, it makes it a great career to pursue.

What’s the best thing about being the EC for your plant?

I’ve been fortunate to work with great people, especially the Green Team that I lead. It’s so great to see our team members making a difference in the community. We get involved in a variety of activities, including supporting our local Earth Fest, environmental awareness visits at local schools and highway clean-up activities.

What’s one of your favorite initiatives that you and your Green Team have supported at your plant?

I’ve been proud to support the plant’s goal of working toward becoming a “zero landfill” facility.  When we were asked to target sending less than 1 percent of our waste to landfill, our Green Team was tapped to support the initiative – and we achieved our goal! So far this year, we’ve sent only 0.69 percent of our waste to landfill. We would not have been able to get there if it wasn’t for the great support from our team members at the site!

How has your role as EC impacted the way you approach sustainability in your home life?

Recycling waste at home has been a focus for my family for a number of years. The EC role has given me an opportunity to share my experiences with family, friends and the community.

What’s your favorite Frito-Lay snack?

I love Doritos Cool Ranch Flavored Tortilla Chips.

Plain Doritos is my all-time favorite. I also enjoy Cool ranch. I've always wanted to work for this company but at the time was working in the medical field and raising my 2 boys that are 24&27 now. Will always be a customer 😊

Congratulations on the good job. I am a retired supervisor from the Vancouver WA plant. I wish we would of had that when I worked there. I would be on that team in a minute 😊Merry Christmas to you all there!

At Frito-Lay, you don’t have to choose between good work and good fun — because you know you’re creative and love what you do when you have the freedom to do both. Explore possibilities! »
