PLANO, Texas - Pack up on the Tostitos, drag out the ice chest and fire up the grill – it’s college football season and the Tostitos brand, along with Heisman trophy winner and former NFL star Eddie George, are searching for America’s best tailgate as part of the Tostitos “Beat My Tailgate” challenge. The contest – which runs nationally from September 2008 through November 2008 – will award one winner and seven of his or her friends a VIP tailgate experience and trip to Glendale, Ariz. for the 38th annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 5, 2009.
With more than 230 NCAA Division I football teams competing this year, millions of fans will be tailgating before the game to celebrate their teams. Now through October 24, 2008 these fans can proudly show-off their tailgating expertise by submitting a short description and photo that capture what’s special about their tailgate tradition to http://www.tostitos.com/.
College and pro football great Eddie George will serve on a panel of Tostitos judges to select the top five finalists who exemplify the most creative display of school or team pride, best theme of tailgating display and best presentation of ideas. One winner will ultimately be determined by online consumer voting in November 2008. Additional details about the promotion, including the official rules, are now available at http://www.tostitos.com/.
"We at Tostitos know that our consumers are passionate about college football and their tailgating traditions," said Ann Mukherjee, group vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay North America. "As a long time supporter of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, we want to celebrate our fans' tailgating creativity and showcase their passion on one of the biggest stages of college football."
Frito-Lay has been a comprehensive marketing and media partner with the Fiesta Bowl, which includes title sponsorship of the game for the Tostitos brand, since 1996.
“Back when I played for the Ohio State University Buckeyes, week after week our die hard fans would arrive hours before the game to tailgate and show their school spirit,” said Eddie George. “I know that every team has fans like ours, and their support is an essential part of the game-day experience. I love that the Tostitos brand is acknowledging these incredible fans and I can’t wait to see the creative tailgates they share with us.”
Since making his mark in college football, Eddie George has carved a special niche for himself in the professional sports arena, particularly the NFL. In addition to the Heisman Trophy, George won the NFL Rookie of the Year award in 1996, and was the Tennessee Titans’ starting tailback until 2003. Drafted in the first round by the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, George owns virtually every franchise rushing record. He also led the AFC Champion Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000, before finishing his career playing one season for the Dallas Cowboys.
