Three Simple Ingredients Prove to Be Recipe for Success

PLANO, Texas – This February, Fritos Original Corn Chips, simply made from three ingredients – whole corn, corn oil and salt – celebrates its 75th anniversary as one of America’s favorite snacks. To commemorate the occasion, the brand is reintroducing the classic packaging and the familiar Frito Kid icon that America first fell in love with.

By returning to retro packaging during its anniversary year, Fritos Corn Chips will celebrate its tasty past and delicious future. The classic packaging will be on shelves nationwide this February. The Frito Kid, who previously appeared on product packaging and in TV advertising, will remind Fritos Corn Chips fans of the long-standing heritage and commitment to great taste the brand continues to hold true today.

The Frito Company was started in San Antonio, Texas in 1932 by C.E. Doolin. Having purchased the Fritos Corn Chips recipe for just $100, Doolin laid the groundwork for what would one day become a snacking empire. For 75 years Fritos Original Corn Chips have delivered exceptional taste to consumers in a simple chip made from only three ingredients – whole corn, corn oil and salt – and contain zero grams of trans, no preservatives and no cholesterol. Today, that same three ingredient recipe remains the heart of the brand’s success.

“For 75 years, Fritos Original Corn Chips has given American consumers the same great taste they have always enjoyed,” notes Ann Mukherjee, vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay North America. “From the original chips to the bowl-shaped Scoops brand, Fritos Original Corn Chips have always remained loyal to Doolin’s original recipe. We’re proud to celebrate 75 years as a classic, crunchy snack, and are looking forward to bringing back the Frito Kid packaging to celebrate our heritage.”

While most often loved straight from the bag, the snack’s simple versatility has made Fritos Corn Chips a part of people’s meals for decades. The crunchy snack has been used as a side dish to warm dinners, as a topping for soups and salads and as an ingredient in pastas and casseroles. Whether atop a batch of homemade chili, or mixed into a flavorful taco salad – Americans continue to find new ways to include the classic crunch of Fritos Corn Chips into their everyday mealtime routines.

Yet the brand’s most timeless recipe remains the Fritos Chili Pie -- one of America’s favorite snack-food creations. First developed in the late 1930s by C.E. Doolin’s mother Daisy, the Fritos Chili Pie can still be found on menus across America. Made with crisp, golden Fritos Corn Chips topped with a layer of warm and hearty chili, this classic dish promises to accompany Fritos Corn Chips through another 75 tasty years.

Frito-Lay has a long heritage of leadership and innovation in the food industry. Such efforts include eliminating trans fat from its entire snack chips portfolio and using cooking products containing healthier oils like sunflower and corn oils. Fritos Corn Chips provide inspiration to create special, delicious dishes made with tasty ingredients.
