America's Favorite Pretzel Brand Rolls Out ROLD GOLD HEARTZELS During American Heart Month

PLANO, Texas - Frito-Lay announced today a collaboration with the American Heart Association to launch Rold Gold Heartzels Pretzels - great-tasting, heart-in-heart shaped pretzels. The new snack is the first pretzel to meet the Association's "Heart-check mark" guidelines as a heart healthy food.

Rold Gold Heartzels Pretzels contain no saturated fat, no cholesterol, less sodium than regular pretzels and have been formulated to be a good source of fiber and iron. The new snacks are now available nationally (10 oz. - $2.19).

"Heartzels are a healthy snack alternative for anyone wanting to control fat intake and add fiber to their diet," said Tracy LaRosiliere, a Frito-Lay vice president of marketing. "What better time for Frito-Lay to launch its first heart-healthy snack than during American Heart Month and just in time for Valentine's Day."

The relationship with the American Heart Association and the launch of Rold Gold Heartzels Pretzels is the latest move by Frito-Lay to continue its commitment to offering a wide variety of low-fat and better-for-you snacks nationally, which like the company's assortment of regular chips can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The "Heart-check mark", displayed on Heartzels packaging, was established by the American Heart Association's Food Certification Program to provide consumers a quick and reliable way to identify heart-healthy foods. To qualify for the "Heart-check mark" a serving of the food must:

  • Be low in fat (less than or equal to 3 grams).
  • Be low in saturated fat (less than or equal to 1 gram).
  • Be low in cholesterol (less than or equal to 20 milligrams).
  • Have a sodium value of less than or equal to 480 milligrams for individual foods.
  • Contain at least 10 percent of the Daily Value of one or more of these naturally occurring nutrients: protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, iron or dietary fiber.

As part of the relationship with the American Heart Association, Frito-Lay will sample Heartzels Pretzels at 60 of the organization's local Heart Walks taking place in cities across the country from February through November.

Frito-Lay already offers low-fat and better-for-you snacks including Baked Lay's Potato Crisps, Baked Doritos Tortilla Chips, Baked Tostitos Tortilla Chips, Ruffles Reduced Fat Potato Chips, Rold Gold Honey Wheat Pretzels and WOW! Fat Free and Low Fat snacks.
