Frito-Lay's Latest Move Follows Elimination Of Trans Fats and Low-Carb Version Of Tostitos Tortilla Chips Also Offered

PLANO, Texas - Frito-Lay, the first food company to eliminate trans fats from its core brands, announced today that it is taking another step in its commitment to offer a wide variety of better-for-you snacks.

Beginning this spring, the company will launch a new line extension of Doritos and Tostitos that has less than half the carbohydrates of its top-selling tortilla chip brands.

The new great-tasting products, which are named Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge, have a total of 6 net carbohydrates, 10 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. Doritos Edge is now in test market in Phoenix, Arizona. Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge will be available in stores across the country in May.

To create the new products, the company will use soy proteins and fiber to convert to a lower carbohydrate chip that tastes great. This move will result in a 60 percent reduction of carbohydrates in both products. These two new products will generate incremental growth for the two brands, Doritos and Tostitos, which have combined sales of nearly $3 billion in the U.S. annually.

"Innovation fuels our business and we're committed to delivering the type of innovation that continues to grow both our base business as well as our better-for-you business. In our core trans fat free brands, we finished the year with Doritos, Lay's and Cheetos experiencing solid volume growth and we're off to a great start in 2004," said Stephen Quinn, Chief Marketing Officer, Frito-Lay North America. "And while we will continue to grow our base business, we are confident that by offering consumers a variety of better-for-you-snacks like Doritos Edge that we will deliver sustainable incremental growth."

Frito-Lay already offers a wide variety of low-fat and better-for-you snacks nationally, which like the company's assortment of regular chips can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. These products include: Baked Lay's Crisps, Baked Doritos Chips, Baked Tostitos Chips, Ruffles Reduced Fat, Rold Gold Honey Wheat Pretzels and WOW! Fat Free and Low Fat snacks. The company's decision to remove trans fats from all its chips last year resulted in the elimination of over 50 million pounds of trans fats from the American diet.

Frito-Lay North America is the convenient fun foods division of PepsiCo, which is headquartered in Purchase, NY. In addition to Frito-Lay, PepsiCo divisions include Pepsi-Cola, Quaker Foods, Gatorade and Tropicana.
