BELOIT, Wisconsin - Frito-Lay, Inc. announced today that the company's manufacturing facility in Beloit, WI, received a top honor from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The Agency re-certified the Frito-Lay facility's "Star" status in its Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), a self-managed safety regulatory compliance program. This is the first "Star" re-certification for Frito-Lay and for its Beloit manufacturing site. OSHA "Star" re-certifications take place three to five years after a site is first awarded "Star" status. The Beloit facility received its "Star" in 1997. The re-certification process ensures that "Star" facilities maintain their standing as corporate leaders in occupational safety and health.
In recognition of the award, Frito-Lay executives and several federal, state and local government officials attended a flag-raising ceremony on Thursday at the manufacturing facility in Beloit, where almost 300 guests attended. The site is located at 2810 Kennedy Drive in Beloit.
"This Frito-Lay facility is an excellent example of a committed team of people who consistently embrace personal health and safety as well as productivity and quality," said Dave Haft, Frito-Lay vice president of operations, who attended the ceremony in Beloit.
The Voluntary Protection Program is designed to recognize corporate leaders in occupational safety and health. To receive "Star" status, facilities must have injury rates lower than the industry average and have comprehensive safety and health programs that go beyond minimal government regulations. Companies submit a detailed application describing their safety and health processes and OSHA conducts a thorough evaluation of the facility. Key elements of the VPP evaluation include management leadership, employee involvement, work site analysis, hazard recognition and control, and safety and health training.
There are more than 600 VPP sites nationwide and in the food manufacturing category, there are 25 "Star" facilities. Frito-Lay has 10 "Star" manufacturing facilities: Beloit, Wis.; Monroe, Wis.; Duncanville, TX; a grain handling facility in Gothenburg, NE; Fayetteville, TN; Visalia, CA; San Antonio, TX; Phoenix, AZ; Dallas, TX and Rosenberg, TX.
